Overview of the Organisation
Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) is a non-governmental organisation registered as a non-profit society in 1983 in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Its mission is to promote ecologically and socially sustainable development which harmonises with and builds upon traditional Ladakhi culture. Today LEDeG has more than 55 fulltime employees reporting to a Working Committee of 8 members. This Committee is responsible for the decision makings and governance of LEDeG's projects.
Since its inception, efforts of LEDeG have been recognized with many national and international awards. LEDeG was the recipient of the prestigious international award "The Right Livelihood Award" popularly known as the alternative Nobel Prize in the year 1986. LEDeG was also awarded a prize in 2001-02 from the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES), Government of India for its outstanding contribution, promotion and dissemination of solar photovoltaic technologies in Ladakh. Finally, LEDeG was awarded with the "NGO of the Year 2005" by Solar Energy Society of India (SESI).
Aims and Objectives
- To create awareness among Ladakhi people on impacts of rapid development on long term sustainability in Ladakh.
- To provide decentralized electrification on sustainable basis to communities and households in rural areas.
- To provide water for drinking and irrigation purposes.
- To improve people's livelihood in the region by introducing various income generation activities and providing necessary support in terms of human resources and materials.
- To strengthen community organisations and empower rural women.
- To strengthen the capacity of LEDeG.
Programmes
- Agriculture (Organic seed production, fruit processing, seed exchange, introduction of new crops, training and R&D, compost making and distribution, study tours etc.)
- Handicrafts (Formation of Self Helps Groups, refresher courses in handicrafts, raw material purchase & distribution, design development for marketing & income generation etc.)
- Appropriate Technology (Solar - passive solar architecture using trombe wall technology, photovoltaic, community solar cooker (Scheffler), solar cookers (dish & box type), water heaters, ovens & crop-dryers; Hydro - ram pumps, improved water mills, multipurpose mills used for carpentry & grinding, micro hydro electric power units etc.)
- Watershed Development Programme under the District Desert Agency, an associate organisation of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (Building of irrigation canals, plantation of tree and siblings, walling, artificial glacier etc.)
- «Integrated Development of Durbuk Block using Renewable Energy Resources» a project jointly funded by India Canada Environment Facility (ICEF), Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) & LAHDC. (Set up a 4x25KWp solar photovoltaic power plant at Tangtse, promotion of eco-tourism units, construction of trombe houses and improve people's livelihood in the area etc.)
- Rural Building Centre (Distributes technologies and information, training on construction, production of cost-effective and environment friendly construction materials using local resources etc.)
Geographical areas of intervention
LEDeG is presently active in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region, including the two district headquarters and 10 administrative blocks.
